Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR)

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR)

We have the first pulmonary rehabilitation centre dedicated to patient in our region. It is a broad program that helps improve the well being of people who have chronic (ongoing) breathing problems.

Our goal is to design a unique program for recovery, health and wellness that fits each patient's needs. Pulmonary Rehabilitation program includes evaluation of the patient, exercise, education, counseling, risk factor modification and learning ways to live a healthier life.

For ICU patients, PR is an important intervention that prevents and mitigates adverse effects of prolonged bed rest and mechanical ventilation during critical illness. It incorporates any active and passive therapy that promotes movement and includes mobilization.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation benefits conditions such as:

  • COPD
  • Alpha 1- Antitrypsin Deficiency
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Lung Cancer
  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • cystic fibrosis
  • interstitial fibrosis
  • occupational/environmental lung disease
  • Pre and Post surgery for Lung reduction

Our rehabilitation team helps patients achieve optimal recovery of function and movement, and enhance the overall quality of life through:

  • Daily Physiotherapy in ICU to facilitate early weaning and shorten the length of stay in ICU
  • Postural drainage, breathing exercises, chest PNF, limb mobilization, continuous rotational therapy
  • Improving respiratory functions through deep breathing exercises
  • Maximizing independence in activities of daily living
  • Promotion of fitness and healthcare
  • Reducing risk factors to help prevent future progression of pulmonary disease
  • Providing education and counseling to improve patients understanding of their condition
  • Dietary guidance from dietician
  • Smoking Cessation Service
  • Providing guidance on return to work, when applicable.
